Fairchild Dornier gives Sherwin-Williams Jet Glo® approval for regional aircraft

ANDOVER, KS – 2/26/01
– The leading choice for more than 20 years as the overall base application on business jet aircraft, Sherwin-Williams Jet Glo® has received OEM approval for regional aircraft from Fairchild Dornier Corporation, Aerospace Coatings Division Director George McCarthy announced recently.

“Jet Glo® will be used on all of Fairchild Dornier’s 328 business jet aircraft, as well as their 728 and 928 classes of business jet aircraft when they begin production,” McCarthy said. “In addition, Jet Glo® will be an available option to airlines purchasing Fairchild Dornier’s commercial class of 328, 728 and 928 jet aircraft.”

A leader in the design, manufacture and support of aircraft for airline, business jet and government markets, Fairchild Dornier has bases of operation in Munich, Germany, and San Antonio, Texas.

The approval, McCarthy acknowledged, was the result of Sherwin-Williams’ two-year partnership with Paint Services Group, the sole European distributor for Sherwin-Williams Aerospace Coatings.

“This is a landmark for Paint Services Group and Sherwin-Williams,” said Sean Lambourne, Paint Service Group’s European sales manager. In 1998, Lambourne said, Paint Services Group gave Fairchild Dornier a product demonstration of the Jet Glo® paint system. As a result, Sherwin-Williams was invited to enter Jet Glo® into the approval program as the paint system for Fairchild Dornier’s VIP-configured aircraft.

“Following extensive trials, it was decided to proceed with a system consisting of High Solids Anti-Corrosion Primer, High Solids Sanding Primer (optional) and Conventional Jet Glo®,” said Lambourne. “Paint Services Group organized independent chemical and physical testing of this system to the comprehensive Fairchild Dornier specification.”

In addition to physical and chemical testing, he explained, Fairchild Dornier organized in-house application trials that were supported by Paint Services Group. “The Orange Peel of the full system was measured and found to be negligible to such an extent that technically it was out of specification,” Lambourne said. “This result confirmed Jet Glo® as the only system to be considered for VIP applications and as an option for commercial aircraft.”

While the hybrid system underwent physical testing, the paint shop conducted extensive application trials and became familiar with the product by using Jet Glo® on third-party aircraft. “Over the two years that Paint Services Group and Fairchild Dornier have been working together on this project,” said Lambourne, “superb results have been achieved on several third- party aircraft using Jet Glo®.”
